Diana Mehira is an experienced professional bellydance artiste. A performer now for 10 years, teacher for past 4 years. Her love of dance began at the age of 5 with classical ballet, progessing onto gymnastics. A member of Equity and holds a Diploma in fitness management, and is also a trained nurse. She is well known for her grace, energetic and precise style and amazing muscular control. She regularly travels to Turkey to learn from local dancers. April 09 she studied with Folk dance teacher Izzettin Elmas to learn Zeybek- a dance from southern Turkey, and will be travelling back to Istanbul to continue her studies. Performances given are of a high standard, to audiences who can appreiciate the art of bellydance. She has performed around the country in weddings, parties, theaters, corporate and charity events, festivals, and in Turkey. Diana Mehira dances in her own unique style which is a combination of Egyptian and Turkish, Arabic cabaret bellydance. She prefers not to use props in her solos, and her solo perfomances are always improvised. When props are used if the music and mood suits, Diana Mehira likes Isis Wings and the veil. Group dances with her students and Desert Jewels will often involve different styles of dance from Folk, to modern arabic pop, and may use finger cymbals, veils and canes depending on the style.

Grace and Laura have been training with Diana Mehira for over 2 years, prior to beginning bellydance they both studied ballet, tap, and modern jazz. They are both also very talented singers.
Jenny and Colleen have been training with Diana for also 2-3 years. Colleen also attends ATS (American Tribal Style) classes with Donna from Pedralta dance, and has attended many workshops with great Tribal Style teachers and also Flamenco and cabaret. Jenny has a mainly cabaret bellydance background having attended workshops with teachers such as Hossam Ramzy and lessons with Katie Holland before moving to Derby and joining Diana Mehira's classes.
Leanne and Katalin are new to the troupe, but are training hard with Diana and also attending workshops around the country when they can.
Diana frequently has guest teachers up to teach workshops in different areas of dance to her students so that they may benefit from learning new styles and seeing the dance taught from a different perspective to her own. Some of our favourite guest teachers have been - the amazing Ozgen- A Turkish male bellydancer who taught us -ottoman harem style and turkish gypsy. Maureen and Dawn O'Brian who taught us - ATS, and then Tribal Fusion and the lovely Tara Ibrahim, who taught us modern Egyptian cabaret.
Desert Jewels have performed at-
Womens business group meeting- Nottingham, school ladies nights, Rufford Abbey bellydance festival, bellydance show at the Guildhall Derby, the Relay for Life event Moorways Stadium Derby, WI meetings, annual Summer Show Chellaston, Derby Rainbow Feste, as well as local haflas around the county. At local community days organised by Derby City Council- 'Street Meet' in Normanton, fun days in Sinfin. Pink Bellydance festival Nottingham.
